Auditory Verbal Therapy (AVT) is a family focused therapy approach assisting children with impaired hearing to learn to listen and speak. It is a parent-based therapy where the parents are coached to teach their child. The Auditory-Verbal Therapist teaches the parents how to set up a listening, learning environment where their child can develop spoken language through using their aided hearing (hearing aid/s or cochlear implant/s).
Early diagnosis and optimal amplification are essential, as access to sound during infancy and early childhood is critical to enable the auditory brain centres to fully develop.
Emphasis is placed on the child hearing and responding to voice while completing play activities based on the typical patterns of development. As their child’s primary language facilitator, parents play a key role in every AVT session.
