READING & SPELLING

“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go” Dr. Seuss

Does my child have delayed reading & spelling skills for their grade of schooling?

Reading fluently with good comprehension requires many skills to occur efficiently and simultaneously. Skilled readers need to have strong phonological awareness skills (the ability to identify, segment, delete and blend sounds in words) and good sight word knowledge (sight words are words that can’t be sounded out as they are irregular and must be learnt).

At Sinclair Speech Pathology your child’s literacy skills would be thoroughly assessed and then an individualised treatment program would be devised. The therapist would liaise closely with educators and relevant health professionals to help your child overcome their literacy difficulties.

Seek help from a speech pathologist if you answer yes to any of the below statements:

  • My child is struggling to progress at school with their reading and/or spelling?
  • My child’s teacher is concerned with their lack of reading/spelling progress?
  • My child is not reading similar books to their peers?
  • My child is not able to understand what they have read?
  • My child can’t attempt to read new words?
  • My child always avoids reading and spelling activities?
